For many years, the SOG knife and tool company out of Lynnwood, Washington has been making top quality knives and multi tools for military and law enforcement use. SOG knives sent me five of their top of line fixed blade cutting tools for testing. Let’s take a look at them;
SOG Government Agent S21
The SOG Government Agent is a beautiful, general use fixed blade that will fill the role perfectly for patrol and SWAT cops should the need arise. The overall length of the knife is 11.25 inches and it weighs about 8 and a half ounces. The AUS 6 (Rockwell 56-57) construction insures strength and keen edge holding and the checkered wraparound Kraton handle is perfect for wet or dry weather operations. I had some members of my SWAT team use the knife and the reports were very positive. The guys really like the stainless steel pommel end for expedient hammering and the fact that the blade was finished in a non-reflective dull black. The Government Agent came supplied with a custom fit Kydex sheath which provides a myriad of mounting options. This knife, like the Desert Dagger S25, fits in the “big knife…but not to big a knife” category and I found it a great addition to my tactical gear. Light weight, super sharp dual grind edge, and durable construction make this a great knife for both rural patrol and SWAT type missions.
SOG Desert Dagger S25
According to SOG, the Desert Dagger was originally requested by military personnel to fill operational needs. The “DD” is constructed of the same tough AUS 6 stainless steel as the Government Agent and comes with a custom fit, multi-option Kydex sheath. The knife has three separate edge combinations including two different grinds of serrations. The blade is double edged providing a lot of cutting surface for heavy cutting chores. I put this knife to the test on several different occasions, cutting heavy braided nylon rope and also some 1 inch thick hemp rope I had laying around from previous tests. The spear point on the blade would serve you well should the need arise to use it as a weapon retention or last ditch, life saving tool. The handle is wrapped with checkered Kraton and has a real solid purchase while gripped in your hand. Like the Government Agent, this knife would be perfect for most cutting chores confronted by patrol and SWAT officers.
SOG Pentagon S14
Mini Pentagon M14
Originally designed to be a back up weapon for law enforcement and military personnel, the Pentagon series is an excellent choice to fill the role as a cutting tool for law enforcement purposes. As I have stated in articles past that I test cutting tools for law enforcement duties (Patrol, SWAT, Special assignment) for what I have seen, or believe, are going to be there primary duties. Those duties being first and foremost as an everyday use cutting tool, an escape tool for both citizen (accident scene or suicide situations, etc.) and officer (officer as hostage), also as a supplemental weapon to be used to aid in weapon retention, escaping a motivated physical attack (suffocating rear choke hold, etc.) or lastly, in “extremis gravest”, as a primary offensive weapon to save your life or the lives of others. From what I observe, Both Pentagon Series fixed blades could more then hold there own in any of these categories. Both knives are constructed of AUS 6 stainless steel (56-57 Rc) and both offer either a serrated or, razor sharp, dual grind edges for cutting options. The handles are the same wraparound, tacky grip style Kraton as the bigger fixed blades and the Kydex sheaths are also custom fit and multi adjusting allowing for a multitude of carry options. The sheaths also come equipped with an integral belt clip mounted on the front of the sheath for concealed, “behind the belt” carry. The “Mini” version comes powder coated for low reflectivity and is an inch and a half shorter (3.5 inches in length, compared to the longer 5 inch blade of the “full size” Pentagon) The blades have dual side thumb notches for added cutting control and SOG’s standard razor-like sharpness. I really liked the comfort and concealability of carrying the Mini-Pentagon in an index carry fashion while off duty.
SOG Outline S090
Small but sturdy, the SOG Outline was designed for versatility in extreme circumstances, it has a 2-1/2″ serrated blade of AUS-6 stainless steel (56-57 Rc). It can be carried either around the neck by a lanyard (included) or in your pocket or belt by the clip on the black Kydex sheath. Its unique handle design maximizes usability for its size while its blade shape reinforces the edge and tip. The hole in the Outline’s handle is intended for a finger to anchor the blade while in-hand, allowing the knife to be used with power. The hole also serves another purpose as a bottle opener. Truly versatile in every way, this clever implement differentiates the Outline from other typical skeleton-type knives. This would be a perfect cutting tool to wear around your neck and stash in the front ballistic pocket of you personal body armor. I wore the Outline in this fashion for several weeks while on patrol and it achieved the “forgotten about” level on the comfort scale.
