Dear Thomas Jefferson…
I am but a distantly related cousin from the far far future; a future that terrifies me. How did we get here?
I would enlist and fight for my country if I still thought that my country and my liberty were one and the same, but the fastest way to enslave the people is to disarm them. And this past weekend…I wish the people had been armed.
My fellow students and friends were tear-gassed and shot with rubber bullets. Some have baton marks on their backs. Many were arrested without having been read their rights. None were protesters – all were innocent bystanders.
Police from OTHER STATES entered their residence halls and told them not to leave. Police from OTHER STATES shot tear gas onto the balconies and into the rooms of a residence hall.
All because a president who isn’t even an American citizen was visiting the city to meet with world leaders and make decisions on OUR behalf…without our input. We were told “it’s martial law…but it’s not martial law.”
How did we get here? How is it that even people who are peaceably assembling get shot and beat and gassed? How is it that these police officers who are supposed to be here to defend the safety of WE THE PEOPLE were simply ignoring that duty and acting in the interest of the man who pays them the most?
Can you see the road we are on? Can you see where it leads? It’s a short distance to socialism if we’re not already there, then a quick walk to communism, and a quick jump to dictatorship and monarchy. How have we managed to go so far backwards by electing “forward thinking” people?
Give me and my fellow citizens the strength, when the time comes, to draw a line in the sand and fight for our liberty, freedom, and rights. Help me to be strong even when I am terrified. And help me help others, even those who are blind to what is happening all around them.
If you could see where we stand today…I think you’d be far more than disappointed.
