Guns & Political Stupidity

Steve Forgues

This last week I read an article at NYDailyNews.com, entitled “Mayor Bloomsberg rips Congress for plan to let guns on Amtrack.” This article is about guns on Amtrak. Following the 2004 Madrid train bombings, rules were put in place that restricted having guns in your luggage. Where was the logic when they put that rule in place? But now lawmakers are voting to take $1.6 billion from Amtrak unless they remove this rule. But now Mayor Bloomsberg is attacking the lawmakers for this, and is quoted at Penn Station saying,

“This has nothing to do with the right to bear arms, and everything to do with keeping our country safe from terrorists.”

What bodily orifice or sand pile does Mayor Bloomsberg have his head in to have such illogical thoughts. Does he and other like minded politicians think that terrorists or any criminal is going to care about such a rule. Whether it be guns, knives, pipe bomb, etc., they do not care about the RULES. Now, I haven’t been on an Amtrak in the last thirty years, but I’m sure that the Amtrak station security isn’t anything like the airports throughout the United States. A few months ago I was in Washington D.C., and traveled via the subway system. Knowing how strict D.C. is on guns, I was surprised at the lack of security. There were police and security cameras, but that was the extent of it; no metal detectors or x-ray machines. As a police officer, I was legally allowed to be carrying my weapon, but the law abiding citizen, criminal or terrorist is not allowed to carry. What prevents them from carrying any kind of weapon, not the laws or any rules. When such laws or rules are in place, law abiding citizens that generally do carry a weapon don’t because they are law abiding. Criminals and terrorists are fully aware of what risks are involved with carrying a weapon, blowing up a building, subway station, etc., but they do it anyways, because they are not law abiding. Seems pretty simple to understand, why can’t politicians like Mayor Bloomsberg understand this? What is wrong with allowing law abiding citizens to carry a weapon to defend themselves? Absolutely nothing. Police and security cannot be everywhere to defend everyone every second of the day. Put the power to defend themselves into the hands of the people. It isn’t the law abiding citizen that is going out and committing terrorist acts. If a criminal brings a gun onto a bus, subway, Amtrak train, etc., and decides to commit a criminal act with that gun, what defense do the law abiding citizens have other than brute physical force. Now if the law abiding citizens were allowed to carry and some chose to carry a weapon, the playing field would be evened out, at least for those who chose to carry. Why turn the law abiding citizen into sheep, when they could be a sheepdog?

On 9/11, the passengers of Flight 93 rose up and were heroic when they fought back against the terrorists that took them hostage and intended on killing many more than what were on that flight. These passengers made the conscious decision not to be sheep and fought back. Although these heroic passengers lost their lives, they saved the lives of countless others by not being sheep. They used what they had available to them, and fought back. My heart goes out to them and their families, they are true heroes.

It is time for change. Although we will never be happy with everything that the politicians do, we can no longer put up with the continued stupidity of our elected officials. We need officials that are going to listen to us, the PEOPLE. We need officials that are going to look at the information and make logical decisions. We don’t need officials that are going to take away our freedoms, and make us defenseless.

Stay Safe!
