Right now, all over this great country of ours, people are debating the need for such things as economic controls, term limits in Congress, healthcare reform, and more. Since Democrats took control of the House and Senate in the most recent elections AND a Democrat was elected as President, often these debates lead people to claim “change is needed”. Funny, since “hope and change” was the platform the Democratic President won his election on.
How about if we start actually seeking some REAL type of change? Perhaps the two-party form of government that has ruled our country for so long needs to be shaken up a bit?
Due to election laws, there is a limit to what you can actually do to impart such change unless you change how you are registered to vote.
Now I know people who register with one party or another because, well… registering with a smaller party “would be a waste of time.” I wonder if it ever occurs to them that if MANY people registered for “the smaller party” then that party wouldn’t be small anymore?
I once had a friend (and wish I could find him now) who said, I’m so far off to the left that I’m coming around on the right. He was speaking about himself. About me he would say, You’re so far off to the right that you’re coming around on the left.
When you think about it, the biggest basic difference between liberals and conservatives is that liberals believe the government can help make life better for EVERYONE; conservatives believe that government has no business trying to tell them what to do if the only eventual goal is to benefit EVERYONE.
When you look at the most shallow reporting on certain issues you see liberals believing in PRO CHOICE while conservatives believe in PRO LIFE. But wait… that’s not ALL conservatives. That’s the “conservative christian right”. How many people do you think are registered republicans who believe that the government shouldn’t have a say in it at all? Instead of having a LAW that says abortion is legal or illegal, how about if there are no abortion laws at all? That, by default, IS pro-choice, but it leaves such legislation in the hands of the STATES. Most conservatives I know would rather have less FEDERAL government and then deal with issues on a state by state basis. In fact, wasn’t that what our founding fathers intended as they so specifically limited the powers of the federal government? People seem to forget that the Constitution and the Bill of Rights didn’t EMPOWER the government; it RESTRICTED the government.
Now we have a situation where the federal government has spent the better part of a century undoing the controls of the Constitution. The “two big parties” have done this together even when they weren’t agreeing on how to go about it.
But now in the United States we’re seeing a growing movement wherein people on both sides of the fence are standing up against the accelerating growth of federal government power which directly affects how much control said government has on your daily life.
Maybe the answer isn’t a change of which party is in power between Democrats and Republicans. Maybe the answer is to put a NEW party in power and let common sense take greater control?
I submit to you that being independent, libertarian or a constitutionalist is necessary to salvage the United States as a country with its most basic foundational beliefs maintained as FREEDOM and LIBERTY.
Whether you are PRO CHOICE, or PRO LIFE, or for GUN CONTROL, or are PRO 2ND AMENDMENT, or believe in SOCIAL MEDICINE or think government should stop pushing HEALTHCARE REFORM… no matter what your values are – if you think that BIG GOVERNMENT is the issue, then I submit to you that neither the Democrats nor the Republicans have the answer. I believe that if you want the power of WE THE PEOPLE to remain with WE THE PEOPLE then you need to support a political party that wants to minimize politics overall and support empowerment of WE THE PEOPLE.
Check out other political parties and how they operate; what values they espouse; where they stand on various issues.
President Obama was right: we do need change. But I think the HOPE that he spoke of lies within the hearts of all Americans who still believe that
A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have. – Thomas Jefferson

I believe you are right on. Government has grown too big for its britches. It is time that we the people stood up and said stop. You’ve come this far, but no further. I agree that we need to check out the other parties and I am ashamed that I do not know enough about them, but I thank you for rebuking me through this article. True change allows the American People to make necessary changes. If the government would get out of it, they would see that healthcare reform is happening, by American people opting not to have it because it is too expensive, that will eventually cause the insurance agencies to come under control. After all, if you stop funding something it will die. The resiliant American People will always band together to stand for the majority of Americans and after all that is what democracy is.
I like to think of America as a tree. The liberty tree, if you will. Republicans and Democrats are at the bottom of the tree hacking away with axes. Democrats chop from the left and Republicans chop from the right, but the outcome is the same. Eventually too much of the tree trunk is cut away and the tree falls over.
It doesn’t matter if Republicans or Democrats are in power. Federal government, under both parties, had eroded and destroyed Constitutional rights since the Civil War. The two-party system basically divides Americans and distracts us with the issues. Division and Distraction are essential to any successful attack. While we’re concerned and fired up over the issues, the government has been slowing dismantling the Constitution for over 145 years.
It’s time to dump both the Republican and Democratic parties and replace them with parties that truly represent the people of these United States.
