This was an assignment my son brought home from school. He’s in the sixth grade and the assignment was from his language arts teacher. It’s called the I AM poem. What follows is three verses. Each begins with “I” and another word, “am, wonder, hear, see,” etc. YOUR challenge is to complete the rest of each statement.
I’ve completed my answers below. I challenge you to copy and paste the parts bold and underlined and complete each statement of your own. I am truly interested to see what so many of you express.
I am a military and police service veteran, but a husband and father foremost
I wonder if the dreams of our founding fathers will carry through future generations
I hear what so many people say about fairness and equality as they lead selfish prejudicial lives
I see the actions people take, almost exactly opposite of what they preach
I want to show them the error and futility of their ways
I am a military and police service veteran, but a husband and father foremost
I pretend that life isn’t a challenge, even when it really is
I feel blessed to have a healthy and loving family
I touch every soul I can in a positive light – or at least try to
I worry that I’ve touched a soul negatively somewhere along the way
I cry when I think about what transgression I may have unknowingly committed
I am a military and police service veteran, but a husband and father foremost
I understand that it’s wondrous for all humans to have different opinions
I say that through conversation and peaceful debate we can all learn from each other
I dream of a day when violence is no longer required to protect the innocent or the meek
I try to exercise communication first but am willing to do what is necessary
I hope my children grow to hold the same values and beliefs
I am a military and police service veteran, but a husband and father foremost
