I’ve been trying to deal with some issues lately with employees that seem unable to perform the duties that their job requires. I know, that sounds rather vague, but I’ve been seeing a greater number of people holding down positions that are either incapable or just unwilling to do their jobs. So, I’ve been examining how this came to pass and in doing so I’ve noticed that this occurs on every level of our society, but mostly as people move higher in the economic food chain.
You’ve all seen it. Someone has a well paying position and seems like a very nice individual but he/she doesn’t fulfill the job to which they’ve been hired. Perhaps this has no effect on your own personal job performance (lucky) and you have the opportunity to merely observe the “train wreck”. On the other hand if this person has duties that directly influence your job performance, you just want this sucker gone so you can find someone to do their damn duties.
I’ve wondered how these people get to this point. How do they acquire well paying positions with authority and important duties without the knowledge or drive to complete the tasks at hand? Well, here it is: They interview well. That’s correct. They tell the interviewer what they want to hear. They look presentable. Their resume is polished and (sometimes) padded in just the right areas. This even happens when there are a number of people scrutinizing the process. It’s pretty easy to get the masses to following the line once a vocal group starts to push in one direction. Then the individual ascends to higher and higher positions because there isn’t anyone to admit this person didn’t have the qualifications for their job, let’s promote them! Don’t believe me? Let us look at a prime example.
Our current Commander in Chief: Barrack Hussein Obama. Following an unsuccessful shot at a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000, he ran for United States Senate in 2004, winning the seat in November. After an unremarkable stay in the Senate from January 2005 until he set his sights on the Presidency, in February 2007 he announced his plans to run. I’m not sure why he (or anyone) would think he was qualified for the position. He didn’t do much during his brief stint in Congress. He only served three terms in the Illinois senate (and it’s not like Illinois was the fifth largest economy on the planet… ala Reagan and California). Why should we make him the most powerful man on the planet? Do his views match our own? Do we respect him in terms of keeping us safe and leading our military? Well, no. It isn’t any of these things. He interviews well.
In fact, I’ve seen several commentaries on TV (I won’t refer to them as “news”) that give us a window as to why we have our current President.
The following is a transcript from an interview on CNN (Cable News Network?) between Joy Behar and Vanessa Williams.
WILLIAMS: But there`s no one else better to be the first. I mean…
BEHAR: Well, he`s brilliant.
WILLIAMS: He is brilliant. What he`s had to face already and it`s not even a year yet? Not even, you know, going into six months, you know, of people shouting in his face.
BEHAR: And calling him names.
WILLIAMS: Calling him names. Calling him a fascist and a…
BEHAR: And a communist which are the opposites really.
WILLIAMS: Exactly.
BEHAR: Yes.
WILLIAMS: And like, you know, likening him to Hitler. It`s amazing how passionate and also so very scary for an American to see how divisive it`s become. But he is the man to do it because he`s graceful, he`s articulate, he`s just — he`s got great class and he`s got courage.
I can’t really comment on the above so I’ll leave you with this question. Are you working your ass off only to fix the mistakes and short comings of those around you? Is your stress level a direct result of the idiocy and ignorance of your co-workers? Do you hate what you do, not because of the job you signed on for, but because of what you’ve been forced to put up with? I want to hear about it. I won’t publish the details unless you really want me to. Go ahead and vent. You have a sympathetic ear here. Let ‘er rip.
