Each month when I sit down to type out my Letter From The Editor I have to sit and think back across the previous few weeks and attempt to remember all the things I saw or heard and thought, “I need to talk about that in my LFTE.” Well, since I don’t take notes, it usually doesn’t work out so well. This month though there are a few easy things to remember and talk (briefly) about.
Last September we merged Borelli Consulting and New American Truth. All of the equipment reviews that had previously been hosted on the Borelli Consulting website were edited and moved over to the New American Truth website and a complete redesign of the New American Truth website was completed. (Many thanks to Steve Forgues and his web design services – www.steveforgues.com. We highly recommend his reasonably priced services.) Every month since the merger our traffic and readership has continued to grow and we thank you, our readership, for that. We’d also like to thank our advertisers for their patronage and support. If you’re in the industry and not advertising with us, then I have to ask, why not? We have the absolute best rates (no arguing there – we beat everyone’s rates), excellent and growing traffic, and a readership that belongs to the demographic you want to reach. So what’s up?
Last month (February) we provided coverage of the 2010 SHOT Show. SHOT Show is the largest single industry event each year and articles about it could be found on nearly every law enforcement, gun, and military website, and in every periodical serving those communities. As with all other event coverage, after the fact, we found things that we wish we’d included. Oh, well. We’re confident that spread out there amongst the quality (and not) coverage, you found info about damned near everything at SHOT Show.
Also in February 49 of 50 states had measurable snow on the ground. I wont’ even begin to harp about “global warming” or “climate change” (which occurs four times a year in most places by the way) but Mother Nature surely did point out how easy it is for snow and ice to cover so much of our country. Many folks who don’t normally have to deal with the challenge of accumulate snowfall faced “emergencies” that occurred for lack of preparation. That even happened to some folks who DO normally deal with snow. We in Maryland are an example. It snows here nearly every winter. Our average total accumulation for a winter season might run 12” to 18”. That’s what our governmental agencies here budget and plan for. That’s what most citizens (who have any sense) plan and prepare for. This year we got 22”+ before Christmas. There went the budgets. In follow on storms we go 15”, 25” and some ice thrown in for good measure. So far, where I live, our total frozen precipitation for the season has passed five feet. We still have a month and some change of winter left as I type this.
Why do I bring that up? Because this is a common sense publication and common sense dictates that you prepare for potential emergency situations. It is only prudent to expect the worst, hope for the best, and be ready for as much as you can in between. This is a mindset we’ve tried to push and explain since our inception here at New American Truth. The ugly fact of the matter though is this: most of our readership is of a similar mindset and those who think we’re paranoid, or extremists, or whatever won’t read the material anyway – so we’re preaching to the choir. It’s cool. Keep singing. We will.
The Olympics have also started (as I type this). I think it’s wondrous and fantastic that so many countries can send athletic representatives to the games to compete. I know that what we see on television is rarely an unfiltered truth, but I wish that all of the countries participating could actually get along as well as their representatives seem to during the Olympics. War might become unnecessary. I know that’s not realistic, but isn’t it an ideal thought?
The mid-term elections are about eight months off as well. I find it interesting (and heartening) to see so many news articles, polls, and more reflecting how poorly the current crop of elected representatives are either not going to run for re-election or they face stiff battles. “As you sew, so shall you reap.” In other words, they’re getting what’s coming to them. It’s a shame that those who have served long enough will make money off of our tax dollars for the rest of their lives even if they did a piss poor job. Those who don’t seek re-election have effectively resigned from office. They’ve just given advance notice. Those who run and don’t get re-elected have been fired. They’ve been terminated. In most jobs when you get terminated and booted out the door you forfeit your pension. Not in the House or Senate. Only there (and the office of the president) can you completely screw up and still get paid. I can’t begin to express how delighted I am that the American citizenry is waking up to the reality of political pandering and demanding – through voice and vote – that Washington DC stand up and take heed: we will not be treated as subjects because we’re NOT. WE THE PEOPLE control YOU politicians and OUR WILL shall be done in DC.
Okay… all that out of the way, let me move on. In this month’s issue we have some excellent articles. Tom Perroni of the Commonwealth Criminal Justice Academy talks about the mechanics (and simplicity) of hitting what you aim at with a handgun. No matter how many different ways you say the same thing it still applies. Basic Fundamentals of Marksmanship are exactly that: Basic.
There’s an article about lessons learned from the winter weather I discussed earlier – and some interesting information there. I provided an article discussing daily preparation, attitudes, outlooks, equipment, etc. Yep, it’s something I’ve done several times in the past but it’s not a static concept. Our daily carry items and outlook evolve constantly – or we fall behind the curve of preparedness. Remember that: if you’re standing still you’re really falling behind. Evolve or die is a long recognized way of nature.
As always we also have our regular columns and, in this case, some reader feedback that was interesting enough to compose into a full article. There are a few cool things and news tidbits in the “What’s New(s)” section and we end with a message from our Chaplain.
Given the way this winter has been for so many we are definitely looking forward to spring. Our April issue will no doubt be full of real hope and change – the kind nature brings and we can all enjoy. Not the kind that politicians spout that turns out to be refried same old crap.
Welcome to March. Read on.
Stay Safe!!
