The Racism Blinders

This morning on The Today Show there was a segment revolving around the recent hiring of a caucasian female to serve as Fashion Director for Essence magazine, a publication a previous Fashion Editor referred to as, “dedicated to the history and fashion of black women.” If you search “Essence magazines hires” on Google you’ll get back plenty of hits revolving around this topic. You all know me: I couldn’t care less. That said, it caught my attention that reverse racsim has been brought up as part of the conversation about whether or not a black magazine should hire a white woman.

In context, essentially, the question was asked: “If Essence magazine only hires black people, isn’t that reverse racism?”

No: It’s RACISM – and frankly I find the term reverse racism to be insulting and offensive. Consider this…

If a black person treating a white person in a prejudicial fashion based on race is called reverse racism then that implies that racism only occurs when a white person treats a black person in a prejudicial fashion based on race. That makes only Caucasians capabale of being racist. Think about the implications of that.

If only white people can be racist then Ebony magazine can’t possibly be; the Ms. Black USA pageant can’t possibly be; Black Entertainment Teleivsion can’t possibly be. Why? Because they are all owned, operated or designed to exclusively serve non-whites. However, if you were to start Ivory magazine, White Entertainment Television (WET?), or exclude anyone not white from the Ms. USA Pageant it would be a matter of mili-seconds before you were being sued for violating someone’s civil rights.

I submit to you this: racism is racism is racsim is racism. Whether it’s a white person treating a black person wrong, a black person treating a white person wrong, an Asian treating a Hispanic wrong… mix it up however you want. If you treat anyone of another “race” (we won’t even go into the gray space on THAT term) wrong based on their skin color, then you are racist.

Reverse Racism is a term that needs to be left by the wayside; remove it from your collection of terms used. It implies that racism is an exclusively white wrong-doing – and that’s simply not the truth.

If we are going to be successful in irradicating our battle against racism in America today, we have to fight it in whole and total – not just battle against WHITE racism.

    Thank you, John H!

  • This most certainly would be true in any other country other than America. Black Americans cannot be true racists according to the real meaning of this word. this is what Author Andre’ D. Davis contends in his new book, THE GOD DEFINED SELF (A LAYMAN’S PERSPECTIVE ON RACISM IN AMERICA). in his chapter, Why Are We Despised?, Davis explains why this cannot be the case w/ blk people in America. Other chapters include, The N Word, Islam And Black Americans & Pastor Jeremiah Wright, just to mention a few. Do yourself & your like-minded followers a favor & pick up a copy, Join this national discussion on how to end racism in America instead of blaming black people in America for this racism problem. Thank you advance. Sincerely, Andre’

    Andre:

Although your post is more an advertisement for your book than a comment on the blog, I’ll let it stand. Your one clear statement seems to be

Join this national discussion on how to end racism in America instead of blaming black people in America for this racism problem.

Buying a book isn’t “joining (a) national discussion.” Nowhere in my blog post did I “blame black people in America for… racism.” YOU read that into my blog post. And until racism is no longer a topic of discussion by anyone, anywhere… it won’t be ended. It especially won’t be ended as long as there are ANY organizations that solicit members or serve members based on race or nationality.
