Un-Common Sense, September ’10

Posted on 06 September 2010

Believe it or not, there are people that consider me an intolerant bastard. No, really… there are! So, when the discussion of putting a “Muslim Cultural Center” about a block from Ground Zero in New York City came up I tried to keep an open mind. Okay, I must admit, my knee-jerk reaction was to tell them they could build it in the middle of Death Valley. At some point I had to take a step back and consider that my prejudices were getting in the way of equal rights. I’m not talking about going all Politically Correct either. I’m just thinking that there really should be some religious tolerance in the world.

I know that history hasn’t been too kind to religious groups. It seems that God is the number one reason for a group of people to get together and kill another group. So, I began to try and think of a real reason (other than it pissed me off) that there should not be a mosque near ground zero. First and foremost I came to the conclusion that people should be able to do whatever they want as long as it doesn’t harm me or mine. Crap programming on the radio or television? So what! Don’t watch. Change the channel. Your neighbor painted his house purple? Get over it. Maybe it’ll make your place look that much better. We just have to get over ourselves.

After all this deliberation I came back to one point. On March 21, 2001 the Taliban government in Afghanistan saw fit to blow up the Buddahs of Bayman. The Taliban decreed that the statues were idolatrous and un-Islamic, therefore must be destroyed. Never mind that these statues predated the Muslim religion by nearly 100 years or that the Buddhist Monks never attacked nor condemned any religion. Someone got a bug up their ass and they shelled these statues and finally just blew them up with explosives.

So, in the interest of justice (you remember justice don’t you?), I submit that we let them build the Cultural Center. Then we allow a religious group (pick one, I don’t care) to decree that it is un-Christian, un-American, un-Patriotic, whatever. We give them a day to clear it out and destroy it. Hell, blame it on the Branch Davidians for all I care. Of course there is no justice. In the words of Denis Leary, “We live in a country where John Lennon takes six bullets in the chest, Yoko Ono was standing right next to him, not ONE FUCKING BULLET! Explain that to me God!” Oh, and please don’t think of me as intolerant.
