In my recently published book My “Personal Disaster Planning Handbook” I discuss the need to address four basic survival needs as you plan: Shelter, Food & Water, First-Aid and Defense. Naturally, the more space you have for equipment, the more comfortably you can address each need. However, comfort doesn’t really play a role in survival and sometimes we sacrifice addressing needs due to a lack of space. Thanks to the AMK SOL Survival Medic Kit you can address, at least minimally, Shelter and First-Aid.
In a pretty small package measuring 6″ x 5.5″ x 1″, Adventure Medical Kits (AMK) packs quite a few items. That list of items includes:
- a 56″ x 84″ Emergency Blanket
- a Fire Lite Fire Striker
- four Tinder Quik Firestarters
- a Slim Rescue Howler whistle
- A button compass
- a 2″ x 26″ roll of duct tape
- a copy of the Survive Outdoors Longer (SOL) survival instructions
- 2 antiseptic towelettes
- 1 package containing 2 Ibuprofen tablets, 200mg each
- 1 package, 0.5g, triple antibiotic ointment
- 1 knuckle band-aid
- 2 1″x3″ band-aid
- 1 safety pin
Now when you look at that list of items you can see where Shelter (the blanket to wrap or use to make shelter, and the fire starter materials to generate warmth by building a fire) is addressed. You can also easily imagine the common uses for the listed first-aid items, although many readers may not view the duct tape as a first-aid item as well. It may suck and hurt to pull off, but it can be used as an effective wound seal.
Outside of Shelter and First-Aid, the kit includes a whistle and a compass along with a safety pin. While I know the many uses of a safety pin I’d prefer AMK replace it with a small knife. Even a knife with a 1″ blade would be handy. Then again, it would be near impossible for them to do that AND maintain the retail price of this kit: $15.
Yes you read that right: $15. For that price tag, buy three. Put one in your vehicle, one in your backpack and one… heck, in your pocket. The potential value of this kit as part of your emergency preparedness or to have with you camping, backpacking, hunting or fishing is obvious.
