My Chief used to say to me, “Don, I don’t like going to these things.”… (He was talking about Police Funerals and Memorial Services.)… And I would respond, “Sir, the older we get the more there will be for us to attend.” Longevity of service and our advancing ages will be the cause of that. He has attended his last one. There will be no more for him. We had his Celebration of Life several years ago, but I still attend as many of them as I can. I have one to attend to Tuesday for a dear friend that I have not seen in a while.
I have thought much on and about you all in this past week. Many scenarios have been brought to mind and played through my thoughts from initiation to end action. When I am not busy or when I am resting, they almost always come back to me and replay again. I have such a great diversity of them that I seldom see the same incident repeated very often.
I welcome them because they keep my thought processes sharp and functioning well. Us older, high mileage machines are kept sharp in mind function because we have been involved in so very much activity that it could be almost endless for some of us.
Those of you to whom I am writing today are currently making your storehouse of memories that will carry you through your career and probably play back for you the way they have done for me all through my career and since retirement.
My Cardiologist reduced one of my meds because it was hindering my recovery of stamina and endurance. The very next day a lightening strike so close that I thought it hit the house blew out several of my electrical circuitbreakers, my cable boxes and several electronic devices including one of my favorite TV sets. I had to get two new cable boxes… Remove so many pieces of furniture and crawl under so many places that my med change was a Godsend… I had the stamina and endurance to get it all checked out and accomplished plus having the cable technician in to check and replace connections on the ends of the connecting cables.
I would have hated to try it without the medication change. Some would call the timing of the med change a coincidence… I call it a God Incident.
He promised abundance to those who believe in and follow His instructions… Abundance means more than you personally need with enough to give away to others as they have need… So I am officiating at a Memorial Service for my friend on Tuesday with the extra that has been supplied.
I have thought much about the Aurora, CO incident. I have for a very long time thought on and prepared my mind as to what I would do if confronted with such a situation. These events have happened in so many diverse places that it could happen to anyone anywhere. Thank you for your many hours of duty, they are most appreciated! Also thank you for the Oath of Office that you have sworn to protect and defend the Constitution and the people! Always be prepared to act in the most unexpected places and in relation to the most unexpected people… We seldom know in advance that there is a perp nearby until the first shot or the first explosion… Then we must be prepared to act. We must be as prepared to act in our forays into the civilian business world as we are to be prepared to act when we are on duty. Think back over the past 18 months and you will get the impact of what I have written… Shopping Centers, stores, theaters, churches, on the sidewalks… Practically any place!
Yesterday I stumbled across two episodes of ADAM-12. That program was popular on TV before I became a Trooper in 1962. It was good to see Malloy and Reid again. One of their cases was a surprise. A holdup was perpetrated by a tall young woman with long, blonde hair. She left on foot around the side of the store. They were close by. The only person they could find in the area was a female of a totally different description sitting on a bench at a bus stop. I was suspicious immediately and so was Reid. She had a large shopping bag sitting by the bench. Reid asked some questions and she said she was waiting for a bus to go to a specific destination. He tricked her in relation to the bus schedule that she claimed she was waiting for and they arrested her because she also had her hair pressed down close to her scalp which is a symptom of wearing a wig… They found high heels and the loot in her bag and she reverted from a soft speaking, nice girl to angry perp mode very quickly. I thoroughly enjoyed the programs.
THANK YOU FOR WHO YOU ARE AND FOR WHAT YOU DO AND HAVE DONE FOR ALL OF US! “BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!” ALWAYS be alert, watchful, suspicious and wary. Take the very best care of you as you care for and about others. See to the strength and well being of your spirit as well as all the rest of yourself. Your spirit must be strong for you to be successful. All of this is by your own choice… He has made provision for you but it is up to you to learn it, take it and put it to use for the best results possible.
Call or write if I may be of any service… Or if you just want to encourage me… Feedback encourages all who write… It helps to know we are reaching someone who reads the message.
Donna came home unexpectedly on Wednesday… Right after my lightening strike. She is not doing well… Sodium still low… Insurance company said she must be discharged… Did not see doctors she should have seen because they did not expect her to be discharged… Home Health Nurse came on Thursday and had to call doctors. Donna is still short some meds. and her blood was too thin again.
No news from Donnie this week.
My Cardiologist told me that I did not need him anymore. He said my heart was as good as it gets. BP was too low to suit him and he made med. adjustments. I feel much better. I had the phones worked on last Saturday, that took 4 hours… The cable worked on Thursday… Me checked out Tuesday… Today all things are working except the shot TV and I have a service contract on it… Today things are even better than usual! Thank you for the responses, care, concern and prayer! KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!
As it has always been… So it still is!!!

BE SUCCESSFUL… BE SAFE…
[My injunction to be safe means doing all you know to do as you do your job... it means doing the best you can with what you have where you are using all your faculties to get the job done well and with good results conquering evil and keeping or restoring peace... it does not mean to avoid duty and honor... it does not mean to cower or allow anything to hinder you in the process of duty according to rules, law and ethics... it means that if the demand takes your earthly life you destroy as much evil as possible in the process. That is my definition of being safe... doing the best you can and leaving the rest to God or whomever else is responsible... being best employed for the sake and protection of all the things and people that we hold dear.]
