Good Morning!
Welcome to Ground Hog Day. Every February 2nd I think about Bill Murray and that movie, "Ground Hog Day". I think about how extremely frustrating it would be to live the same day over and over for ten years - until you get it right. Certainly there are days I wish I could take back, but as I've learned: all the "bad days" I've had ended up with me being right where I am - and it's not a bad place to be. All of the decisions I made that I was told were the wrong decisions by anyone I couldn't escape listening to have put me right where I am - again, not a bad place to be. I guess what I'm trying to say is that we really can't determine whether it was a good day or a bad day at the end of the day. A decision can't be judged good or bad until the long term affects have been measured, sometimes decades later.
Keep that in mind when you fall asleep at night and be thankful to wake up every morning.

| Tactical Equipment Evaluation:
ATN's Javelin J68 Light
In today's world of tactical flashlights, a company doesn't have to lead the way to be successful; they just have to make a decent product. The demand for quality high-performance tactical lights has grown as two circumstances have been recognized: 1) Law enforcement works in the dark a LOT and it's typically our most dangerous environment, and 2) our military does more work in cities now than it does in the open field. Both circumstances have lead to an increased need for a durable light that's versatile. Welcome the ATN J68 to that group. Here's why... |
| Murphy's Combat Philosophy:
"Subject Matter Experts" and "Professionals" have their place, but never get married to their ideas. Remember that (1) professionals built the Titanic, while (2) rank amateurs built the ark.

| Recreational Equipment Review:
Snow Gear
Every now and then we find pieces of equipment that perform in unexpected ways. Previously I've done reviews on the 511 Tactical Aggressor Parka and figured it would work well for cold weather situations. I haven't yet done a full review of the Desert Ops boots from BLACKHAWK! Warrior Wear, but it was on my "to do" list. As Maryland finally had an appreciable amount of snow this past week, I had an opportunity to verify my thoughts on the parka and use the boots in an environment they certainly weren't designed for. They performed well anyway. Here's the story. |
Reading
"Moral": defined as of, pertaining to, or concerned with the principles or rules of right conduct or the distinction between right and wrong; ethical. All of us like to believe that we try to live our lives in a moral fashion. We always try to do right. We tell the truth. We don't take advantage of people. But what about when the difference between right and wrong gets blurry? And it definitely can happen, especially in combat / survival situations. Let's take a look at a simple example: The question: is killing a six year old child wrong? Absolutely. Clear right and wrong. Thou shall not murder. What about this though: Is killing a six year old child to save the lives of a hundred other children wrong? Hmmm... Murder is wrong. Killing the six year old is wrong. But if I don't kill the six year old and I willingly let the other hundred kids die as a result of my lack of action, I've chosen a path that makes me responsible for their deaths. In that case, do I have a moral imperative TO KILL the six year old child? Where terrorist operations and counter-terrorist operations are concerned, morality may get blurry but we have to remain resolute to do the right thing - as best we can under horrible circumstances. |
My Blogs on Officer.com
My most recent... It's garnered over 40 comments and some of them are pretty heated so I thought I'd leave it up for your consideration.
Concealed Carry & Common Sense Courtesy
While I have typed about this particular topic before, I feel the need to do it again. I was recently emailed a document from the Arkansas Department of State Police. It details the Concealed Handgun Carry License Rules. In section 3.2 it requires any CCW holder to surrender said license "upon request for identification by any law enforcement officer." |
| Red State Papa's Blog
A sanctuary for right thinking warriors
Red State Papa is a blog maintained by John M. Wills. I first met John a couple years ago and was impressed by his dedication STILL to a job (law enforcement) that he's retired from and an attitude (warrior outlook) that he maintains ANYWAY. "Conservative Christian" is a term that could have been coined JUST for John. I've had the pleasure of receiving emails from him that are supportive, offering advice, recognizing accomplishment, sympathizing with challenges. I want to share some of his outlooks with you all. Check out his blog.
