Good day!
Welcome to the first day of December. If there was any doubt that the silly season had started, it's been erased. In the commerical insanity that was "Black Friday" people fought and shot each other all around our nation over various gifts and toys. As early as three and four in the morning people were leaving their homes to go out shopping. If you were one among them, congratulations and I'm sorry. I don't envy you that experience.
December is also the last month of the year and, as such, it invites us to take stock of our lives throughout the previous year. As much as we offer thanks for our blessings as we stuff ourselves on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas is a time to consider what really matters in our lives; to set aside the stress of life's trivialities and to enjoy what warms our hearts. I hope December brings you plenty of such warmth.
Be Safe.

The RAT H.E.S.T. Knife
From the team of RAT Cutlery and DPx Gear comes the H.E.S.T. knife. HEST is the acronym for "Hostile Environment Survival Tool". RAT stands for "Randall's Adventure & Training". DPx alludes to the knife serving best in the world's most "Dangerous Places". I'm not quite sure why the X was added. All that laid out, I was slightly surprised to get such a small knife designed as a survival tool. Of course, I had to test it, learn about it and so on. What I've learned is interesting and I'll share it with you. According to the information disseminated about it and available online, the knife is manufactured from 1095 steel hardened to a measurement of 57-58Rc. The entire length of steel, with the exception of the sharpened edge, is powder coated black and it's one of the most evenly applied, fine finished powder coating jobs I've ever experienced. |

Good Friday. Black Friday. Easter. Thanksgiving. Christmas. Open enrollment. Stock market fluctuations. School starting. End of school year. Back to school shopping. Tax exempt week. When does your car's inspection expire? The registration? When do you need your oil changed? How much is gasoline today? Is the stock market up or down? How's that affect your retirement fund? With all of that on your mind - and it's a short list that still doesn't include things like sick children, house cleaning, meal preparation, grocery shopping, etc, I had to stop and wonder: when do we have time to pay attention to what our government is doing? |

A Little Paintball
Quite some time ago when I attended a force-on-force instructor development program (so long ago it wasn't even called "force-on-force" yet) I learned about something called a "pain penalty". That pain penalty was what you got when you did something that was tactically incorrect and you got shot with a training projectile. Getting shot - even with a wax pellet full of a colored liquid - wasn't something I found pleasant and I tried diligently to avoid it. Low and behold, shortly thereafter, the sport of paintballing grew and thrived and still does so today. It has to be fun or it wouldn't be doing so well, and this week we're going to explore some of why it might be so fun and some of the minimum equipment you need to enjoy it. |

A Fighting Generation
It is an observable oddity of the American society that we sometimes act or behave exactly opposite to what is in our best interests. I know a great many people who act oddly when they are falling in love, but that's not really a surprise is it? Some people say that a soldier who sacrifices himself for his fellow soldiers has acted oddly, but others understand the selfless sacrifice he made - and should be honored for. What strikes me this week that I'll write about in this article is how our American society seems to be structuring itself to raise ever more pacifist citizens at a time in our history when we are most in need of warriors. |
