Understand that even as you act you change the circumstances that supported your last decision thereby jump starting a new decision making cycle. Never assume that THIS action is the LAST action – it NEVER is. Finally, remember that YOUR safety is YOUR responsibility. If YOU fail ultimately YOU will pay the price.

Act accordingly. Don’t hesitate. Don’t be polite. Act with speed and aggressive violence to immediately end the existing threat. Be able to explain your observations and fears / motivations afterward. Your actions still have to be justified and legal – which shouldn’t be too hard to articulate in light of the potential threat.

Practicing your shooting skills is something that needs to be done on a regular basis if they are to be kept at a competent level. Like any physical skill, they will deteriorate if not practiced.

Malfunctions are any interruption in the cycle of operation which can be remedied by performing malfunction clearance procedures (sometimes referred to as an immediate action drill.) The interruption can be caused by mechanical failure of the weapon, the ammunition, or be induced by actions of the shooter.
