Uncle Don taught me how to build primitive shelters using the knife he gave me and what nature provides. He taught me my first lessons about firearms and how to build a safe fire. He also taught me how to skin rabbits, squirrels and snakes. I can’t say I ever enjoyed that last part but when I got hungry enough it all tasted good, especially after being cooked over an open fire.

Yes – I believe a knife is your single most important survival tool. To get the most out of it you need to identify your expectations before you buy.

I submit to you that if you are planning for only one type of emergency then you aren’t planning completely. “No plan survives first contact with the enemy,” is an old military axiom and in this case “the enemy” is any emergency that comes along. Examine your situation. Consider possibilities. Maybe it’s worth preparing in more than one layer.

Some prepare to survive for a few days or weeks of travel. Some prepare to survive and defend a static position for years. Plan and prepare in layers so that you remain flexible even as you develop your “best scenario” preparations.

No matter what your justification for being a prepper is, YES, you are a zombie apocalypse prepper.

Mostly they ate enough to live; traveled as was required; and defended themselves as necessary. Pretty simple.
