HOW you go about your camping and/or backpacking trips determines the depth to which you are practicing being prepared for an emergency situation. I know folks who “camp” in their fifth-wheel trailer with satellite TV. I know “ultra-light” backpackers who carry far less than I do when they go camping.

Uncle Don taught me how to build primitive shelters using the knife he gave me and what nature provides. He taught me my first lessons about firearms and how to build a safe fire. He also taught me how to skin rabbits, squirrels and snakes. I can’t say I ever enjoyed that last part but when I got hungry enough it all tasted good, especially after being cooked over an open fire.

I submit to you that if you are planning for only one type of emergency then you aren’t planning completely. “No plan survives first contact with the enemy,” is an old military axiom and in this case “the enemy” is any emergency that comes along. Examine your situation. Consider possibilities. Maybe it’s worth preparing in more than one layer.
